SciCult Laboratory Secures Major Funding for Norway’s First Mobile Heritage Science Lab

SciCult-KHM – Science for Cultural Heritage KHM – is a heritage science laboratory managed by the Department of Collection Management at the Museum of Cultural History (KHM), University of Oslo.

The SciCult Laboratory at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo, has been awarded 4 million Norwegian Kroner for the “Mobile-SciCult” project through an internal call for funding dedicated to the establishment of research infrastructures. A key factor in the success of the application was the strong support from E-RIHS, which played a crucial role in securing this funding.

Mobile-SciCult will be Norway’s first multi-analytical mobile laboratory for Heritage Science, significantly enhancing the country’s research capabilities in the field. Building upon the museum’s existing portable XRF and 3D scanning equipment, the project will enable the acquisition of cutting-edge analytical instruments, including:

  • A new portable XRF spectrometer
  • A fiber optic reflectance spectrophotometer (UV-NIR)
  • A portable Raman spectrophotometer (514 and 785 nm)

The procurement process is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with the mobile laboratory fully operational in 2026.

This initiative marks a significant step forward for Norwegian Heritage Science, enabling advanced, on-site cultural heritage analysis and reinforcing international collaboration within E-RIHS.
